Credentials issued to CredFolio are immutable, meaning they cannot be changed or updated by the holder. They are issued based on distributed ledger technology and incorporate decentralised identifiers. These identifiers that can only be issued once by a decentralised network.
If you view a credential on CredFolio, you can be assured that it is genuine and displayed as issued by the originating authority.
Verifiable credentials are based on W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) standards. They use distributed ledger technology to ensure the authenticity and integrity of their subject. Information of any type can be embedded, issued and validated.
Given the flexibility of the information that can be associated with a verifiable credential, they can be used for any purpose that requires validation that a claim was issued to an individual. This could include an identity document, licence, membership card, certificate or academic transcript.
Digital badges are based on the Open Badges standard. The data is embedded into an image which can be downloaded and verified externally. Digital badges are primarily designed to be used in the education and training sectors to endorse informal education and specific skills. Because they can only store data to specific fields as defined by the standard and therefore are more suited to simple ‘badge-style’ achievements.
Credentials are issued through CredLink, CredNet’s self-service portal. An issuer sets up their credential or badge in the platform using a base credential configuration. They can then issue credentials individually, in bulk through file upload, or programmatically via an API (Application Programming Interface).
If an issuer has integrated their system with CredLink’s APIs, they can issue their credentials using their organisation’s normal procedures.
Blockchain is the most common form of distributed ledger technology (the technology that underlies Bitcoin cryptocurrency).
Each piece of information created is recorded in a block, chronologically connected to other blocks.
When new information is added, a new block is added. If previous information is changed, a new block is added. The information in these blocks is secure because it is synchronised across a variety of networked computers, making it tamper resistant.
Access to CredFolio is by invitation only. When a credential is issued through CredNet, an account is automatically created for the holder. The holder will then receive an email, inviting them to register for CredFolio.
Once registered, they will be able to access their credential through the CredFolio website or mobile app (available on the web or on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store).
A holder of a digital credential simply logs into CredFolio and generates a secure link that can be shared. The link can be passcode protected and set to expire at a set date.
